Swapan Chaudhuri is a phenomenon in the arena of Indian Classical
Music. Musicians honor him as one of the most highly respected Tabla
players, worthy of the highest regard all over the world. His music
is the spontaneous expression of his powerful emotions and his deep
knowledge of Tabla. It is undoubtedly through his clarity and elegance
of performance, that he has achieved notoriety as a true master
of Tabla. In recognition of his outstanding contribution to music,
he was given the National award of the Sangeet Natak Academy in
1998. He was also awarded the American Academy of Artists Award
in 1998. Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri was nominated twice, in 1996 and
1997, for a Grammy Award for his recordings with Asha Bhosle and
Ustad Ali Akbar Khan. Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri has accompanied Maestros
such as Pandit Ravi Shankar, Ustad Ali Akbar Khan and many other
eminent artists. His music reaches beyond the scope of Classical
music to include performances and recordings with musicians such
as Mark O’Connor, John Handy, Larry Coryell and other reputed musicians.
Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri is the Director of Percussions at the Ali
Akbar College of Music in San Rafael, California and in Basil, Switzerland
where students from all over the world receive intensive training
in Tabla. He is also on the faculty at the California Institute
of the Arts in Los Angels, California.
